Keeping Your Poinsettia Happy Year Round

Keeping Your Poinsettia Happy Year Round

Poinsettias, with their vibrant red, pink, or white bracts, are a favorite holiday plant. But did you know that with a little extra care, you can keep your poinsettia healthy and thriving all year round? Here are some tips for giving your poinsettia the TLC it needs to keep it looking beautiful long after the holiday season is over.

First, it's important to give your poinsettia the right amount of light. During the fall and winter months, when the days are shorter, poinsettias need at least six hours of bright, indirect sunlight per day. This can be achieved by placing the plant near a south- or east-facing window. In the spring and summer, when the days are longer, your poinsettia will benefit from being placed in a location that receives filtered sunlight, such as near a sheer curtain or under a tree.

Next, make sure to water your poinsettia properly. Poinsettias are sensitive to overwatering, so it's important to let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. The best way to check the moisture level of the soil is to stick your finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water. If it feels moist, wait a few more days before watering again.

In addition to providing the right light and watering conditions, it's also important to fertilize your poinsettia regularly. A balanced, all-purpose liquid fertilizer, applied according to the package instructions, will provide your poinsettia with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

With proper care, your poinsettia can continue to thrive and provide you with beautiful blooms for many seasons to come. So don't toss your poinsettia out after the holidays – give it the care it needs, and enjoy its beauty all year round.
