6 Tips For Growing String of Pearls (and other trailing succulents)

String of pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is a popular trailing succulent that is known for its unique, pearl-like leaves. Here are some tips for caring for a string of pearls plant:

  1. Light: String of pearls plants prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as this can cause the leaves to become sunburnt.

  2. Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to let the soil dry out. In general, watering once a week is sufficient for most string of pearls plants. Overwatering is the leading cause of death with trailing succulent plants.

  3. Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix specifically designed for succulents. This will help prevent root rot.

  4. Fertilizer: Fertilize your string of pearls plant once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) using a fertilizer formulated for succulents.

  5. Pruning: Prune your string of pearls plant regularly to remove any dead or dying leaves and encourage new growth.

  6. Bottom Watering: Place your String of Pearls pot directly into a saucer of water and allow water to hydrate the soil from the bottom instead of the top. This will allow the roots of your String of Pearls to reach for the water, instead of sitting in wet dirt on the top layer which can lead to root rot. Be sure to remove your pot from the water within 10-20 minutes so it doesn’t soak up too much water.
